Submission Guidelines

Wingspan Quarterly is seeking well-written, skillfully crafted writing that grabs its readers, holds them, and then lingers in the imagination. Entertaining reading that evokes an emotional response and which works on multiple levels is more likely to be published than scholarly or so-called "literary" pieces.

We do not accept hate literature or propaganda that promotes or encourages the denigration of people based on gender, race, religion, sexuality, etc. We are also not interested in pornographic or exceptionally violent/profane pieces. We do not accept fan fiction. Humor/wit is always a plus, but is not required for publication. Political and spiritual - but not preachy - writing will be considered.

We are especially interested in work that is evocative of flight, travel, place, and the natural world.

Fiction

Open to all genres and types. Intelligent, enjoyable, and evocative storytelling a must. Quality ghost stories, science fiction, etc., welcome. "Experimental" writing must also be good writing. No fan fiction. Fiction should not exceed 3,000 words without prior arrangement with editor; submit up to three prose pieces per submission period.

Nonfiction

Personal essay, travel/location pieces, exploratory writing, historical pieces. Research-based writing with a narrative or conversational tone -- no "scholarly" writing. Proper citation (MLA or APA) required as appropriate. Nonfiction should not exceed 3,000 words without prior arrangement with editor; submit up to three prose pieces per submission period.

Poetry

All forms and subjects welcome; particularly seeking poetry that works on multiple levels. Rhymed verse is discouraged and must be exceptional to be considered. Poems should not exceed fifty lines without previous arrangement with editor; submit up to six poems per submission period.

At this time Wingspan is not considering visual or recorded art.

How to Submit

Submit work via email to wingspanquarterly@gmail.com, either pasted into the text of the email, or as an attachment in .RTF, .DOC, or .PDF format.

Include a short (100-word maximum) author's bio, written in the third person. Your bio should include previous publication credits, if applicable, and should provide at least a general geographical location. We will not accept work without some sort of author's bio.

We recommend, but do not require, that you send a photograph of yourself as well. If your work is accepted, your photograph will be included in the online version along with your bio. Photographs can be in color or black-and-white and should be sent in a .JPG format. Arty or abstract photographs are fine; images must be appropriate for viewing by all audiences.

You may submit your work under a pen name; however, Wingspan Quarterly will not accept work published under internet handles (i.e. DuneMaster2321) or otherwise unrealistic names (i.e. Princess Maizie of the Planet Dogstar - unless you can back that up as fact!). Wingspan Quarterly also does not accept anonymous submissions.

We do not accept simultaneous submissions or previously published work; pieces published on your personal website/blog or in workshop forums are acceptable.

Additional Information

We send confirmation emails upon the receipt of submissions. Please bear in mind that this is not a guarantee of acceptance. You will be contacted as to whether or not your work was accepted after the close of the submission period.

By submitting your work, you grant Wingspan Quarterly permission to publish your work both online and in a print edition, as well as to archive your work online for a period of no less than a year.* You also grant the editor permission to edit your work for technical corrections, to contact you about more significant revisions, and to make appropriate changes as necessary for inclusion. All publication rights are retained by the author; however, you should be aware that your work's first publication rights will be forfeited if published in Wingspan Quarterly.

At this time, Wingspan Quarterly does not provide compensation for publication. In the future, we hope to provide payment and/or contributor copies; your continued financial support of this magazine bring us closer each day to that goal!

*Upon request, work will be removed from the archives to satisfy submission requirements at other publications. Requests must be received via email. Wingspan Quarterly will not remove current work from the online edition.
