Santa Barbara Art institute declared bankruptcy
in 1975 leaving Burgess several credits shy of graduation. Louis
Lankford, a longtime friend offered Burgess the opportunity to
graduate from Grand Canyon College in return for creating a printmaking
department for the school. The artist jumped at the opportunity
and was put on staff at the college as a teaching assistant in
intaglio printing and serigraphy.
The printmaking department was
completed by the beginning of the school year. The following
year Grand Canyons art department was ranked among the top one
hundred liberal arts college art departments in the country.
