Grants

G.I.S.T. actively seeks grants to fund special projects for the community.  Two of the most recent include one from the Idaho State Historical Society to record the stories of veterans, and a grant from the Lasting Legacy project of the City of Boise.

In efforts to preserve the history of Idaho veterans, the State of Idaho granted G.I.S.T. funds to write and record their stories. Family members hearing the stories said that they had never heard these stories from their parents. The seriousness of the project became further apparent as several of those interviewed at the State s veterans home passed on or lost the ability to tell their stories. Tapes and written stories are on
deposit in the state archives, while the stories live in the minds of the school children, family members, and community folks who heard them.

There was another, unexpected benefit. One vet, who had not lived alone since Vietnam because of a stress disorder, reported that participation in the veterans project gave him the perspective and validation he needed to move out into the larger community.

The main goal of the Lasting Legacy grant from the City of Boise was to preserve the heritage and culture of the City of Boise. Members of G.I.S.T. interviewed residents who lived in Boise for fifty or more years and created stories from the information. Stories were presented at community events, such as Tellebration!, as well as at schools and libraries. Video tapes, booklets, and teachers guides are available for
sale. Copies were also placed in the archives of the City, in the Boise Public Library Northwest archives and in circulation, in the general collection of the Idaho State Historical Society library, and in the special collection of Boise State University.
