INDIAN
VALLEY, IDAHO
August, 2003
photo)

In memory of Harold Robert Ludwig
February 1, 1920 - February 2, 2002

In 1920 my father was born in this house
in Indian Valley (closer view, right). He grew up in these
beautiful surroundings with his six younger sisters and
brothers--farming , milking cows, and rounding up cattle with his father
and many uncles. He collected many arrowheads in those days, so I
assume "Indian Valley" was named that for a reason.

This was his old schoolhouse, empty now
but still preserved. There is presently no school in Indian
Valley, though a fire station there is operational.

The General Store is still the only store
in town, looking much as it did when my dad was a boy.
Recently operating under new ownership,
its original display cases will be removed, since the meager store
profits won't provide the $15,000 required for the new owner to purchase
them. A few convenience items are available at the store, and
there is an old soda fountain area that's still open.
Most of the 100 (+ or -)
people in the area live on ranches, where much hay is grown in the
summer with the abundant water. In spite of one of the hottest,
driest summers on record, the land was still fairly green when we
visited this August; and there was still some water in the river, as
well as in many streams and ditches flowing through the land. I've
been told the water table is very high, and assume there are some
natural springs in the area.
The Little Weiser
River flows through Indian Valley, though it's low this time of year. I need to return in the spring when it's
really beautiful!
More scenic views--and a panoramic
scene (below),
if you have time for it to load . . .

(Scroll through expanded full-sized view for a
detailed panorama!)

On to the Indian Valley Cemetery, where
some of my dad's uncles and grandparents are buried. On the
right
you can see the "town" of Indian Valley, looking back from Cemetery
Lane.
A wide view, looking from the entrance
to the cemetery.

A general view of some older
graves, and on the right a closer example of one of the old headstones
there. They are all beautifully maintained and well marked, though
some are roughly marked in cement more recently, perhaps as part of a
restoration..

The graves of my father's father's parents, Charles Robert Ludwig and
Georgina Sabrina Say Ludwig Bivens (known by my father as "Grandma
Bivens"). They are buried side-by-side,
but unfortunately are not identified in the headstone engravings as ever having been married.
On the right is a photo of the house they built in Payette, Idaho before
moving to Indian Valley. They are pictured with a hired hand on
the far left; and on their left, their children Harry (my grandfather),
Mabel, and Grace. (The house in Payette is still lived in.)

On the other side of the cemetery are the graves of my father's mother's
brothers and some of their wives, the Johnsons.

In this view you can see there is extra ground on the right. I've
considered inquiring about purchasing it to continue using it as a
family plot.
My dad's mother and father. Harry Charles Ludwig and Myrtle
Elizabeth Johnson Ludwig and her parents,
Richard and Mary Ann Johnson are buried in the Weiser, Idaho Cemetery.
I remember my Grandma Ludwig saying that she didn't want to be buried at
Indian Valley because it was too wet under the ground.
We visited their graves on the way home from this Indian Valley trip:
