About your host... BIKEBOY (aka Steve Hulme) is a Boise
native. I gave bike commuting a try back in 1986, as the result of a
friend’s example and encouragement, and have never gone back to a car, with
its inherent expenses and frustrations. Except for a few really snowy/icy
days - when I take the bus - I commute year-round. (I haven’t driven a car
to work, even once, since September 1997.) My commute is about 8 miles round
trip; I also do a substantial amount of recreational and fitness riding,
averaging 4500-6000 bike miles a year. I love bicycling, and want to
share my enthusiasm with anyone who is interested. Please e-mail your
comments, questions, etc. Extra! Extra!
On September 1, 2004, Bikeboy arrived at 100,000 bike miles!
Read all about it!
2004 was a BANNER YEAR for the Bikeboy! I rode the bicycle on 358 of
the 366 days in '04, and accumulated 6057 miles. Zero accidents (knock
on asphalt), 22 flat tires repaired. (I know... I'm somewhat of a
numbers fetishist. May be due to my computer-geek background.)
I am an expert at flat tire repair (grin!), and have taught “Bicycle Flat
Tire Repair” in Boise Schools Community Education for several years.
I was a charter member of the now-defunct Mayor’s Bicycle Advisory
Committee, and continue to actively support efforts to make Boise more
bike-friendly. As of January 2005, I'm serving on the ACHD Bicycle
Advisory Committee, with other dedicated local cyclists.
I’m no Lance Armstrong! I’m 6-foot-3, and generally go 225-250 lbs.,
depending on the time of year (winter and holidays are tough!). I’m probably
10-15% overweight, according to the chart. The point being, you don’t have
to be one of the sculpted “beautiful people” to hop on a bike and ride to
the office, or across town... JUST DO IT!
